Evening Childcare at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center

Hawkeye is offering evening childcare at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center during the Fall 2024 semester.

Childcare will be provided, free of charge, for children of students who are attending class and using services in the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center for learning.

This service began in Spring 2023 through funding provided by the Iowa Women’s Foundation. Services continue thanks to the support of the RedTails LEAD AmeriCorps program funded by Volunteer Iowa and College support.

Days/Hours: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:15 – 8:45pm

Ages served: 6 weeks – 10 years

Pre-registration is required before your child/children can attend. Dropping off a new child/children the night of class is not allowed.

  1. Complete the online Responsive Child Care Services Registration Form.
  2. Pay the one-time $20 registration fee per family.
  3. Complete necessary forms before your child/children receive care.

Any additional cost for future semesters will be announced before the future semester begins.

Program Policies

  1. Childcare will be provided only while you are in class and using services in the Center for learning. If you leave Hawkeye’s Van G Miller Adult Learning Center, your child/children must leave with you. No exceptions!

  2. Children must be in good health in order to attend.

    • Sick children are not to be brought to the center and will not be allowed to stay.
    • Children cannot receive care until they are symptom free for at least 24 hours, including no diarrhea, vomiting, or fever of 100.4°F or higher.
    • If your child/children becomes sick while in our care, you will be notified and the child will need to be picked up immediately.
    • If your child/children is or has been ill, please consult with the Child Care Coordinator/Director about your child’s health to determine if and when they can return for care.
    • The purpose of the illness policy is to protect the health of children, staff, and families.
  3. For this service to be free, you must provide the supplies listed below for their child/children will need while in our care.

Supplies Needed for Infants – 1 Year Old

Please bring the following items for your child/children each time they attend:

  • Formula and food: Bring bottles, formula, sippy cups, and food/baby food or other nutritional needs your child will need while in our care.

  • Diapers and wipes: You will need enough supplies for the hours your child/children will be attending. Please plan for extra supplies for soiled/bowel movement diapers.

  • Comfort items: Please bring items to meet the needs of your child such as a pacifier, teething ring, blanket, etc.

  • Complete change of clothes: This extra set of clothes will be used if your infant/child has an instance when diaper contents spread onto their clothes or the child spits up. Please be sure these clothes are in their current size and comfortable for the current weather.

Supplies Needed for Children 2 – 10 Years Old

Please bring the following items for your child/children each time they attend:

  • Snack: Food for a snack for you child/children to eat during snack time. Please feed your child a meal before they come.

  • Sippy cups or reusable water bottle: Water will be available but no other food will be supplied.

  • Diapers and wipes (if applicable): You will need enough supplies for the hours your child/children will be attending. Please plan for extra supplies for soiled/bowel movement diapers.

  • Complete change of clothes: This extra set of clothes will be used if your child's/children’s clothes get dirty or wet or if they do not make it to the bathroom in time or diaper contents spread onto their clothes. Please be sure these clothes are in their current size and comfortable for the current weather.
